Thumbnail Quality Improvement

    For a long time, one of the things that has irritated me with WordPress is that I have to modify code with every release, including the most recent 2.3 Beta 2, to have it generate decent quality thumbnails for images uploaded via the uploader. The default quality of the produced thumbnails is extremely poor, at best, and the fix for it is ridiculously simple.

    If any of the developers read this, please consider looking closely at the following change for WP 2.3:

    File: /wp-admin/includes/image.php
    Line Number: approximately 84

    Change:

    if (!imagejpeg( $thumbnail, $thumbpath ) ) {

    To this:

    if (!imagejpeg( $thumbnail, $thumbpath, 100 ) ) {

    Note the 100 added. This will significantly improve the dreadful quality of the default thumbnails when large images are uploaded. With WordPress such a quality product, it's a shame that the thumbnails produced are of such low, almost embarrassing, quality.

    Alternatively, making that "100" a variable that can be defined in the Admin Options would allow people to choose the level of quality for their thumbnail, as there will of course be a direct relationship between thumbnail quality and file byte size.

    I'm with you on this one, while maybe not a 100% total (something close to 90 is enough) is a worthy feature, it should be included in the admin so you can determine, I never thought there was a way to edit the quality, but thanks to you now I do!

    Why hasn't WP adopted this yet?

    This is one reason why I did it: http://www.alakhnor.com/post-thumb/

    Umm, ok... yet another person trolling the suggestion forum to spam their plugin(s). :rolleyes:

    A plugin is not needed for the above-mentioned suggestion. A simple option to control the quality of the INCLUDED WORDPRESS image upload tool is all that this suggestion is about.

    Not everyone needs, or wants, a separate plugin for every little thing. The ability to control the quality of the thumbnails created by the INCLUDED WordPress file should be there by default and not rely on any third party plugins.

    Sorry master, I should have been more explicit. What I meant what: this is a good idea (as I had to do this ->...<- because it was missing).
    And I don't need to spam cause I've already earned zillions thanks to WP plugins.
    Beside this misunderstanding, this is a discussion forum. Not everyone knows every little things of what is possible or not with WP, even those who post here.
    And I'm looking forward to seeing some decent thumbnail management INCLUDED in WP.

    Surely the best solution is to have an option in the WordPress Settings which defaults to the current quality setting but can be amend to 90 for those of us who want better thumbnails (or 100 for those pro photographers out there who use WordPress)?
