Actually with WP2.8 taxonomy features were introduced. You can now have any different type of post/ page/ content that you can think of. Google WordPress pods plugin for some info on how you can make the feature more usable
Here is a link to pods plugin and pods ui plugin. It makes a nice framework from WordPress.
3.0 has custom post types, custom taxonomies, and custom menus.
