    I like the idea of having tags in the core, so long as it doesn't replace categories.

    But I also like the way that the Cloudy plugin does this - it just goes through your posts and AUTOMATICALLY adds a tag cloud of your most used words and phrases. This is a hell of a lot less work. Granted, it doesn't have the power of tags and it doesn't catch related terms, but it's a hell of a lot less work and much easier to teach customers. Writers will baulk less at the amount of work required to just write a post.

    Great idea, but I'm worring about how to update WP from a tagging plugin: I use STP and so it create two (or more? cannot remember now...) tables on the MySQL database. A new builtin feature will need an import tool for more than one plugin (I see here UTW, Jerome's Keyword and so on)... maybe it's too difficult? Well, BTW, without replacing categories at all, plz! :)

    1. Tags in Core! with nice URLs
    2. Import from SimpleTagging or TagWorrior
    3. Tags separate Categories
    4. Tags width template-tags - eg if (is_tag(TAG_ID))
    5. Tags for posts AND pages
    6. Similar tags with limit
    7. TagCloud with limit of shown tags (eg all with 2 or more articles/pages)

    It would be awesome if a "tag system" would be a default feature of WordPress. Right now there are lots of plugins that will add tags and even a tag cloud to your site, but since these days it's all about the latest trends and developments (with web 2.0 etc) I think this is a *must have* feature for WordPress.

    Don't be afraid that tagging will REPLACE categories! The category system can be EXTENDED with tag-FUNCTIONALITY, which by the way already has been done (you can place one post in several categories, looks like tagging to me).

    The ones who want categories can then treat the tag-system as a category system (they will do so automatically = very userfriendly). If they want categories and tags, they can use the native tag-system as categories and a tag plugin for tags.

    Just implement all tag-functionality you can think of and Jaykul talked about above (page 1), but call it categories! That would make everybody happy.

    We have developed an auto-tagging plugin. It will automatically tag the entire archive of your blog using tags that are informative and statistically significant across the blogosphere. It puts each of your post in the context of your archive and other blogs and find the tags that will retrieve related posts in your blog and in other blogs. The benefits are: increase page views by showing readers posts in your blog with the same auto-tag; send your blog to be discovered by readers of other blogs in the community; bring broader perspectives to readers; and more ads space.
