store uploads as blob data

To help secure WordPress, I'd like to be able to store file uploads in the mysql database as binary blob data. This way I wouldn't have to open up ftp on the blog server and worse yet chmod 777 on a directory.

I'm really concerned about the ftp access and a suggestion that a directory be set as world writable.

Uhm, saving it as blob data would put a heavy load on SQL servers cause their really not meant for file storage.

But they do handle it well. I've had blob data in my mysql servers before with no problems. Since I have my own servers, I know the hardware and connection can handle it.

There's no real difference between blob data and any other large data field as far as storage and retrieval. If I write a 50k blog entry or upload a 50k jpeg, the load on mysql is going to be the same.

The main concern I have is the permissions set on the content folder.
