    Option to force a single post to appear at the top of the list on your front page.

    Yes. There should be a time limit too: "this post should remain stickied for XX days, or until XX time has passed". That way, it could be used for "Featured content"

    it's called "adhesive". it's a very highly effective plugin. wp developers should not waste time when the solution already exists.

    Functionality exists with the Adhesive plugin that eleni2 mentioned, however we have just been given a static front page in WP2.1 so it could be included in the future as long as it's given a low development priority.

    Adhesive doesn't work with the 2.1 branch, in fact it caused glitches for me and judging by the forums for several people

    Besides it would be a sweet addition to the published states

    This should ideally be built into wordpress. It's a very useful thing. It's probably one reason why I use expressionengine over wordpress.

    This should really be left to plugins. Actually, it doesn't require much code at all to implement it in your theme yourself.

    Sticky posts were included in core as of version 2.7.
