Standard editor toolbar

Regardless of what editor is used, the text editor or the visual editor, it would be great if WP offered a standardized area for plug-in authors to add editor icons. The toolbar would be external to the editor and include standardized javascript functions that would insert/update information within the editor. In addition, hooks would be created so that the toolbar could be updated with icons, etc.

With the same interface, javascript functions and internal functions being used, it should lessen the compatibility issues with plug-ins that we see today. Plus, if the editor does change in the future, the back end functions would change allowing plug-ins that use this standard to be compliant and continue to work.

I think by default, the editor should have buttons for all "allowed" tags. Fine, ignore script/iframe etc, but there are tons of elements (particularly the phrase elements) like kbd, dfn, dl, dt, dd, tt that are missing.
