Site Closed Option

An option in wp-admin to close the site for maintainence, or what have you.

An include file and a page is all that would be needed along with some rudimentary code to eit the site-closed page.

There's a good plugin called Maintenance Mode which does this but having it in the core wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Not difficult to implement, good addition for grown-up blogging/CMS software.

This is quite easy to achieve by simply replacing the index.php file with one that has a notice in it to say your site is down.

if it activated automatically when updating plugins. it saves users from landing on an error page just because plugin -x is still uploading to the server.

you could implement this through a 'maintainance' system theme - there is already a theme that only displays a coming soon message. this would make it super simple.

yes, but it being in the core means that no work is necessary on our part! Just a "site Down" and a custom message field
