Simple gallery functionality

Now that WordPRess has a upload manager, it'd be great if we could also natively create simple galleries.

Maybe a little drag and drop dealie from the upload manager?

I agree, other gallery plugin are way too complicated or not URI friendly.

It would avoid so much frustration for users if WP had an incorporated and uncomplicated Gallery that allowed comments, that could simply be turned on or off during installation.

I agree. Where other folks are discussing many ideas that could be plugins, this seems to be a core function that wouldn't work well as a plugin.

I disagree, but maybe that's because I know how to use Gallery2 and WPG2 to display photos in my blog. I don't think /photos/ is an ugly URI...

This would not only require a way to display the photos, but more ways to administer them. For instance, how would keep from displaying a certain photo in the gallery? And it opens up the issue of nested galleries. IMO, this is better left to specialized software that already integrates seamlessly with WordPress.

It is my only hope & prayer that WordPress 2.1 will have some type of photo gallery.

I know there are some hot Flickr plugins that allow use of Flickr sets - but it would be nice to have something a bit more tied into WordPress.

    Pretty please?

I did not want to clutter my website with too many plugins (www.teinstituut.nl, try 'Foto's"). This is hacked by 1) making a separate category template 2) using the excerpt for entering a thumbnail 3) excluding the excerpt from the full post 4) turning off the autop function for excerpts in the default filters. This could be a whole lot simpler imho...

I disagree: There are good gallery-plugins out there like myGallery that are easy to use and do a great job.
WordPress must continue to concentrate on its core-needs and improve them. Part of this is to make plugin-dev even easier than it is now. So own Gallery-Scripts can be created!

I totally agree! Maybe it's possible to native support gallery (or gallery2) if you want to have a fotolog instad of a blog. I guess the possibility to make the default page as the galley( or other pages) is implemented.
