Every time I update WordPress, I have to delete Dolly.
Thats so annoying! She steals my time and I think bad of her. Why do you make be do this?

So, please say goodby to Dolly for the default-installation-package.
Everybody who shouts out Dolly's name will find her in the Plugindirectory.

PS: Instead of this idea I really dont want to see dolly anymore!

The Hello Dolly plugin is there as a plugin development example, in a system that is successful because of it's ease of development. The plugin isn't activated by default and plays nicely with other plugins, so why not just leave it?

TBH it isn't a very useful development example and really it shouldn't be included in the distro (even if it was useful) because _most_ people don't develop. Developers can get it (or a better example) from a bunch of places.

It wastes space and bandwidth. Over the years that must have added up to something big; far more than the joke is now worth.

Ditch Dolly!

@adamh: Dolly might have been a nice first start for plugindevelopers in the past but it is not now. It lacks all the interesting and important functions that mage plugin-dev. for WP interesting. I isnt documented with an eye on learning plugin-dev. eather.
In addition it is just not useful. There are many more plugins that are used fare more often but that are not part of the core.

On the other hand everybody has to read, look, unterstand, decide an maybe delete ... speaking with j. nielsen: hundrets of hours of wasted time. I am with BrokenCrust except of the fact that time is much more important than space and brandwidth.

By the way: "Why do you make be do this?" = "Why do you make me do this?"
