Revert the 2.5 Write screen to 2.3

The new Write screen in version 2.5 is a step backwards in terms of functionality. It takes far longer to compose a post as you now have to scroll up and down a lot more. Why these changes were made is completely baffling.

Things that I could easily do in 2.3 are now more difficult in 2.5:

    1) Categories are now under the write box, not easily selectable from the sidebar and don't appear 'above the fold'. Too much scrolling is now involved -- it was quick and streamlined before.

    2) I cannot re-organise the feature list under the write panel. In 2.3 many of these were in the sidebar and were sortable using drag-and-drop.

    3) Page slugs don't appear until the first autosave or until you publish. They also are automatically set to the page title when created by this process. This is counter-intuitive. Please GIVE US BACK CONTROL of our page slugs -- WordPress can't read my mind about what I want to put in there, it shouldn't be so cocky as to try!

    And my axe.

I prefer having categories and tags to the right of my post.

By most measures, I think WordPress has emerged as the leader in this particular software niche -- until the WordPress Write Posts / Page / Links system. At best, it reduces efficiency.

This is not meant as a plug from MT. But seriously, take a look at the logical placement of fields and that fact NO scrolling is necessary on a 1050 pixel high screen to reach any of the commonly used options for writing a post.

For most things, MT simply does not do as good a job as WordPress. But with WordPress 2.5's Write screen, MT has WP beaten hands down for writing posts and pages.

Consider my vote a 5-stars vote for this. Make the write screen both efficient, and usable. Right now, this is perhaps one of the biggest faux paux's I've seen WordPress make to date.

A million cheers for this idea.

As I said to the wordpress team a few days before release of 2.5:

The new admin panel in WordPress 2.5 looks well done, but there are a few changes that are counterproductive.

First, why is categories below the text editor and not alongside it? Scrolling down to select a category is pretty annoying. The categories module should be returned to the side of the text editor where it previously was to provide more balance between the two columns in “Write Post”.

I voted for this. There's also a long discussion in the support thread related to this that people might find interesting:

(But post your input about this issue in the IDEAS thread right here, as it's more likely to be seen by the developers.)

The ticket in track was closed as being "not an idea for trac."
