Require alt text during uploading images

If WordPress is going to require an image name when uploading, that name should go to the alt attribute, not the title attribute.

I love the new uploading interface, but I noticed that when the HTML is generated, the name of the image becomes the title, not alt, which is supposed to be a required attribute when writing HTML aside from src.

    I totally agree.

And see this thread for the problem with the alt tag field: http://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/topic.php?id=1650

Basically it forces you to use image captions if you want to add an alt tag. How anyone thought this would be desirable as the default is beyond me.

The required text for the image should be the alt tag and not the title, and IMO the title tag should be used for the caption, not the alt tag.

This has sort of been implemented in WordPress 2.7. The name of the upload is automatically placed in the ALT and TITLE attributes now.

(Now my concern is having ALT and TITLE attributes at the same time is a bit redundant _and_ annoying in screen readers.)

  5. I'm not currently running the latest version of WordPress so have no idea if this ALT img issue has been implemented or not yet?

The first step was separating the alt text from the caption, which we've now done. The title is required for permalink reasons. I agree that alt text should be required, but we need to find a better way to do it before forcing it on users. Opening up for discussion in the UI and dev groups.

But alt text shouldn't be required on any image--or rather, there should be an option to have empty alt text, as recomended by accessibility experts.

Why not simply require an image name, and have the option to use that name for the title or alt text, or to leave them blank? The way the uploader inserts empty alt text right now is perfectly in line with accessibility recommendations--please don't change it!

Requiring alt text is good, forcing a value is bad

I don't know if it should be automatically set from the title, because then people could have misleading ALT tags and taht could mess up your AdSense and throw other things off.
