Remove Sponsored Themes from WordPress.org

Why on earth do you want to remove them? Almost all of them are quality themes! Many designers who upload free themes put links to all of their websites (portfolios, blogs, personal sites etc) and some people put only 1-2 sponsor links, so what the heck is the difference then? Why can't designers earn a few dollars when they make quality themes and make them free? Would it be better if they started to SELL them? I don't think so.. It's up to you of course, but I think this is a BAD idea...................

without those sponsered links- you'll never have quality themes for free!
no one will post a good theme if he could sell it for some money..
    think about it

For the WordPress Community's motto alone I would stand my ground on banning them from codex.
Putting sponsored ads/links in themes is not disallowed, nevertheless is not encouraged neither, taking advantage of users' innocence while using community's resource(both living human & invisible authorization of the codex), to me, is subtly deluding users.
We should consider adding constructive advisory on "sponsored themes" in the theme codex if this idea doesn't work out.
Furthermore, Google is going to be a large factor in the economics of sponsored themes, despite whichever angles you look at it.

I think that sponsord themes should continue to be allowed on wordpress.org. But, like others have said, there should be some clear disclosure that a given theme contains sponsored links, and it should be easy to remove them.

I suppose the reason that this debate seems to be getting so heated is that it's desingers motives, not actions, that are really under discussion.

I'm sure that many of the designers releasing sponsored themes, would do so without the sponsored links if they could afford to, but this is (part of) a living for some.

Then there are others, who may feel that the sponsor money is an incentive to create more appealing themes. I'm not at all saying that sponsored themes are better than unsponsored ones (or vice versa). But for some people, financial gain is an incentive to innnovate. Which can only be a good thing for the community.

There are risks associated with sponsored themes, and I think that WP.org has to make bloggers aware of those risks. But I don't think that the risks sufficiently offset the concequences of sponsored themes being excluded from the site.

How should theme authors earn money of those themes? They put alot of effort in creating a theme so other people could use it for free, so why shouldn't we let them make a little bit of money trough selling sponsor links in free WordPress themes? As long the amount of sponsor links stays low (1 or 2), what's the problem? As said before, the bloggers themself decide wether to use the theme or not, and if they do, the choose to remove the links or not to.

I agree with craig552uk. I am a theme developer myself, and have released 17+ themes. There's no way I could ever have the time to that without a bit of financial support. You see, not all theme developers are independently wealthy and can afford to spend 100+ hours a month on a hobby. If I did, my girlfriend would kill me!

Sponsored themes should be allowed - Why should a designer put in hours of work and not get any reward?

A few text links which bring the designer a small amount of money do noone any harm. If the people that are so quick to go and download themes actually gave the designer a small donation then sponsored themes would not be necessary but as this rarely, if ever happens, then I believe sponsored themes are very necessary.

If a designer spends 24 hours designing a new theme to get no reward why would he design themes ?

The end of sponsored themes on wordpress.org will just see the end of excellent themes on wordpress.org !

As a designer, I know that I would NEVER upload my themes on wordpress.org if sponsored themes were not allowed. What's the harm in getting a small reward for your work?

Theme quality will go down without sponsored links. Think about it.

    Down with the 'commercial' man!

Well, ... I think commercial themes don't support the free spirit of the 'open source' idea behind WordPress. That's my simple opinion!

I do not think banning is a good idea, however some rules on fair use should be in place to limit the amount of sponsored links.

At the end of the day the user does have the choice of not using the theme. Let the people decide.
