Relative path for images/uploads?

I know that there has been lots of discussion of relative vs abolute links, but some of us really want/need relative links, regardless of what othere may think of them. Pleaee, please, please include this possibility. It would be so nice if I could manage my WP site like I do my Joomla one -- with a development site on my own home computer!

Not at this time. You can use plugins for this.

    At what time then?

Also, which plugins? Which ones really work?

Aside from the theoretical (personal) reasons for not imploementing this, are there practical ones -- e.g., would it be a tremendous job of rewriting code?

Yes, it would require tremendous effort to recode everything in a way that remains backwards compatible.

FWIW, this has been suggested a lot, and core devs have always said no. You can search this ideas forums for older discussions, or for "Why does WordPress use absolute URLs?" to get into all the drama.

    As for plugins, see http://wordpress.org/plugins/abt-relative-urls/

should use get_home_url(), then your links are absolute, but it does not affect if you change the site url
