Password protected site

    WordPress provides the ability to password protect individual posts or pages and gives the option for a site to be restricted to users, but doesn't give the option for individual posts to be restriced to users

    True. WordPress relies too much on the assumption that everyone wants maximum amount of visibility for all of their posts, at any cost. If you try the opposite, WP will fail. Category Visibility, for example, is a nice plugin, but it does not offer complete protection (and it does not operate on individual posts). wp-group-restriction restricts pages, but not posts...

    You could do login/password protection for an entire site/directory using a .htaccess file, I believe.

    even though it can be done with the .htaccess file, not many members know how to do it. if WP is trying to make this as userfriendly as possible, a password protected site/categories would be great.

    .htaccess does not work in situations where you want some parts of your blog available to some people and other parts to be available to others, as well.
