Optional Challenge Question to stop Comment Spam
I utilize Bad Behavior and Akismet and comment spam is still getting through. I modified the contact form that Ryan Duff built with an integrated Challenge Question and answer and it eliminated my Contact Form Spam by 100%:
Comments should have the same capability. Users should be able to define a challenge question and answer that they can change as often as they want. This process is much more successful than any CAPTCHA or other type of automated technology.
Due to the frequently-changing nature of spam, this might be better as a plugin. Also, consider that this is what Mark Pilgrim would call a "Club" solution. The more people who use it, the less effective it will be.
Obviously, there are a bunch of plug-ins that add this capability. Some are well-written and easy to use, some are not. Spam is a big problem and it would be nice to see some additional layers of protection built-in. Akismit is great but not 100% effective. Captcha + a work-around for those with disabilities would be a great addition to the default WordPress package; blogger.com (google) has added this option.
I'm not sure the suggestion listed in the original post would be all that effective if there are hundreds of thousands of blogs using it.
The "challenge question" spam filter is a GREAT idea as it works like a Captcha but also remains accessible! Its also sooo simple, much less technical than generating a distored image of text. Sweet!
I don't see how it could be come a "club" solution since its so easy to change the question(s)? Its prefect...!
This works fine outside of the core in plugins.
Also, Akismet handles my spam with ease.
For those, who want to have a challenge-question in the comments-form, try WP-Gatekeeper. I'm running this on my system together with SK2 and have no spam at all. No need, to put this into core.
