Option to turn off COMMENTS on new Pages and/or posts by default

    What I would like to suggest is mentioned on this thread in the forums:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/turn-page-comments-off-by-default-311

    What we would like is a blog settings option that allows the admin to set whether pages and/or posts have COMMENTS ON or COMMENTS OFF by default. At the moment it defaults to COMMENTS ON, which is often not convenient especially for Pages on which many site admins do not want people leaving comments.

    I imagine it is very simple to implement.

    Whole-heartedly agree, just what we need for efficient web design without requiring fixes to themes.

    There's already one for ALL comments, but not for just pages or just posts (so it allows the admin to set whether pages and posts have COMMENTS ON or COMMENTS OFF by default).

    @Ipstenu;
    Thanks for clarifying this point.
    Yes, there is such an option for the whole blog, affecting PAGES and POST.
    What a group of us (of undetermined size) have been asking for for some time now is for this feature to split in two... one affecting POSTS, the other affecting PAGES.

    The reason being is that it is quite typical to not want comments on PAGES (static content, often used in a CMS context), whilst being open to comments on posts (changing content typically used in the Blog context).

    Now that WP is incorporating more and more traditional CMS features and being used for such, it is important to have the flexibility to control certain options for Pages and Posts separately. This is on such option we'd like greater granularity on.

    Oh no, I get it! I agree with you in fact :D I was just pointing out that the and part of the requested and/or was already there.

    There is a trac ticket out there already for this: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/17478

    I would post your suggestions there.

    (N.B.: Inspiredmind and Inspired888 are the same user. I had to use Inspired888 [an old account I had] when it would not let me know in with Inspiredmind. Have since worting out the password issue with inspiredmind)

    @Ipstenu,
    Yes, thank you. I absolutely saw that you got it, and was really just reiterating your point... and making my point clearer in light of what you'd said. BEcause my original post had ignored the fact that there is already an option for this feature which affects PAGES and POSTS together but not separately.

    I'll check out the Trac ticket.

    P.S. By the way... if you also want this feature, please give it a star rating. Thanks.

    This is the best option for the admin to control the post comments

    Okay, so would you be interested in a plugin that would give options to Disable comments for pages or posts ?

    @Histograph
    In the absence of this being a built-in feature, I would certainly use a plugin for this.

    Ideally, however, it seems like such a simple and useful feature (and one that would require so little code adaption to implement) I would love to see it incorporated in WP by default.

    In the mean time a plugin would do the trick and be most welcome.
