Maybe it's just me, but I don't ever use the Visual Rich Editor. I'd like to have a version of WordPress that takes up less time to upload and upgrade.

i would think the possibility of new users accidentally downloading the wrong version would make this unattractive.

I don't think it adds that much to the download, but it's not that hard to make a download page where one version is clearly the "default" version that everyone should get, so I don't think user confusion at the download point is really a valid reason for not doing this.

Right now the most popular ways of doing user-input on websites (wikis, blogs, forums) is clearly not WYSIWYG (although we may still be moving in that direction), and many bloggers are using rich client apps like Windows Live Writer etc. ... so I wouldn't argue against offering a version for download without it if you really thought it was worth it as far as bandwidth/time savings (there are still dialup users out there ... somewhere)

The size of the rich text editor is nominal compared to the total size of the WP download. If it wasn't in there, you wouldn't notice a difference in the download time. Plus multiple simultaneous versions of WP can only lead to confusion...

2 versions (wysiwyg and non-wysiwyg) would add unnecessary complexity to the maintenance and upgrade process... but please, please allow us to deactivate the damn visual editor without removing the tinymce.js file manually!!!

Agree with Sun. Folks can change their mind afterwards as well.

Instead of removing it, the developers should just add the option to turn it off by default

You can turn off the visual editor in your profile page.
