Only Permalinks option in post metadata

    When you close comments and pings to a post, you see the message 'Comments Off' for that post.

    You have to close both. If you only close the comments, but get the pings open, in the post metadata continues saying 'No Comments', '1 Comment' and so on.

    Could be nice to have an option for the metadata that Says 'Only Pingbaks' or some similar.

    It could be easily done by adding a new parameter to the function comments_popup_link() for that purpose, and changing some lines to something similar to:

    if ( 0 == $number && 'closed' == $post->comment_status ) {
    if ('closed' == $post->ping_status ) {
    echo 'Comments Off';
    } else {
    echo 'Only Pingbacks';
    }
    return;
    }

  2. This sounds like more of a theme-specific issue, which obviously, most theme developers don't take the time to do.

    I think it's not a theme-specific issue. Yes, it can be addressed on the theme (as I do), but the core wordpress function comments_popup_link(), only returns "Comments Closed" if comments and pingbacks are closed.

    I think that if I mark the comments closed for a post (and leave pingbacks open), the function have to retun "Only Pingbacks". If not... it should return 'Comments Off'. By now it returns the same as when comments are open.

    I think is really polite to have the core function returning when comments and pingbacks are closed, and when only is closed one of both.
