New type of "pages"

In todays wordpress, i can have only "pages" and "posts". It would be great, if there could be an option, or prepared "background for plugin", for making a special type of "page" - which would basicaly use the same table, same columns, just different "type", so it will not show with list-pages / post functions, it will have own functions (it should be universal, where the desired type would be a parameter), it would be easy to "switch off" the unnecessary parts of the "add page" page, add new fields (saved as meta), and you could define, what will be shown in the "manage pages" table. And it would be possible to define user rights (add/show/change/delete...) to any type

This functions is crucial for many applications, e.g. you could then easily do a "shop" - just use new "page" type as a database of shop items, or for any other site-specific content and is one of two reasons (+ user groups), why it is necessary to use other systems sometimes.

This is i believe quite easy to do, as most hooks and database structure is prepared.

I'm not entirely clear on this. Couldn't you accomplish this by having a new template that only calls posts of a certain kind?

no ruzel, you cant. The problem is, that there is no type of post when you make it. It would mean you have to have all features you want on the add post page, e.g. in shop, you will have to have fields like "price", "stock amount", ... for all posts, and just do not use them, but this would make it absolutely unusable

Isn't this easily doable with custom fields?

I would definitely be interested in this. I will actually be trying to implement a new post type myself in the coming weeks. But it would not be used for a shop like the original poster wanted. I would use it as a 'index' page. The difference being, when a user created an index page, they would not be given the standard post editor, but a choice of fields to fill out (ie. what pages to link to and a description for the links)

Has anyone tried anything like this?

Custom fields does this. I use two plugins for this: Get custom field values, and Custom Field GUI. Works perfectly.
