Merge WordPress and WordPress-MU

Many users might be interested in having several distinct blogs hosted on the same installation. WordPress MU would be one way of doing that (avoiding multiple installs).

What about just merging the two so that WordPress becomes wordpress-mu?

+1 for merging. There is no need for the merged version to be called "-mu". Multi-blog capability should simply be part of core WP. For those of us working in academia, this is a huge need. Furthermore, both WP-MU and Lyceum still require all blogs on an installation to be located either in subdirectories or on subdomains of the installation. On the University site I manage, I require the ability to output blogs to any location. And there are multiple domains on the server. I want to be able to have ONE WP installation, and to have blogs living at places like:

    domain.edu/events
    domain.edu/faculty/[name]
    domain.edu/student/[name]
    otherdomain.org
    jobs.domain.edu

The sad truth is that this is trivial to do with Movable Type, but virtually impossible to do with WP, WP-MU, or Lyceum. We're fed up with MT and want to do everything with WP. This capability is long overdue.

BTW, it is possible to do this with b2evolution. b2 lets you put a "stub" file in any directory on the server, which takes care of resolving all of the paths needed to resolve the current blog's location relative to the central WP install. The technique works very well. But I'm not interested in moving to b2.

What MU provides isn't really the same as having multi-blog capacity. It's aimed at webmasters who want to enable other people to sign up for blogs on their server, rather than at individuals who want to be able to run multiple blogs from one installation. These are different goals and shouldn't be confused, so I'm not sure what a merger with the MU project would achieve.

People have been asking for the ability to run multiple blogs from one install pretty much ever since WordPress forked from b2, so if it were practicable it would have been implemented by now. I'm guessing that the architectural changes required are now just too great.

I love that others see the distinction!

All this different database config file and database prefix malarky to use the code is irritating, especially if you have 100+ of them!

I agree, I think it's really important/vital for WordPress to somehow implement some sort of multi-blogging capability. Not MU's user based blogging, but to give us the ability to run multi-layered blogs on one install.

Nice to see more people thinking the same. Would save a lot of time when maintaining multiple blogs ;)

Have been playing around with Virtual Multiblog for the last few days and it works like a charm - this is definitely something worth considering, if not a must, to incorporate within the WP core!!!

Wow, just found Virtual Multiblog - I'll be testing it out in a few weeks - is this the ultimate WordPress solution for multiple blogs, seems to make much more sense than switching to WordPress MU, with it's inherit limitations.
