Media Library Folders

A lot of sites I develop use a lot of images and the users get very frustrated trawling through page after page of images when they can't remember the name of what they're looking for.

It seems obvious to me that it would be far easier to be able to create folders within the media library in order to sort the uploaded media.

Plugins like nextgen and media categories are ok at a push, but this should be core functionality for any CMS and the current media library feels like an underdeveloped weak-spot from the days when WordPress was just a blogging platform.

Perhaps some of the basic nextgen functionality could be adopted and become native.

I am one of those users, and would REALLY REALLY REALLY like some sort of way to manage the hundreds of images we have. It is really unbelievable that you cannot create folders.

There are plugins for this, but it's just not at the tipping point for core yet.

That's probably because the average wordpress user has no idea that it even happens. This doesn't mean it shouldn't be introduced.

It's disappointing that WP isn't trying to compete as a more mature CMS.

At the same time, it falls under decisions, not options :) Giving users too many options confuses the average user, and almost always the new user too.

This is simple, it works, and most people don't need to organize images by folder but by post (i.e. your images should be associated with where you're using it).

@Ipstenu I respectfully disagree. Adding folder functionality wouldn't add complexity: if you don't need or want folders, you don't have to create new ones.

Plus, adding folders would give us the opportunity to attach meta information to the folders. For instance, we could specify that images uploaded to the gallery01 folder should be cropped and resized a certain way. As things stand in WP, if you want to add a new sizing option, every image will be resized that way. That's just not right. And, it's not very CMS.

I got this resizing-associated-to-folder idea from ExpressionEngine. It's a very elegant solution to the image size problem.

@alfred3x I have to disagree with you on the complexity. What you propose is complex. Also resizing images in a certain way should not be done on folder level but on use case level. What already can be done in code.

Folders would make life MUCH easier.

I'd like to second (fifth, sixth?) this idea. I've also got a mockup of layout idea, for the view with folders:

Anyone who has used Filezilla, and is familiar with the idea of a folder with the name '..' to go up one. That along with a list of all sub folders in a side panel would help. The ability to show/hide the folders panel would help maintain continuity for users who don't like change.

I already got working code but I implement it in the view. I think a side panel is a bit tricky to implement due not useful hooks for that.
