Logical image uploader

The WordPress image uploader has come a long way. As of version 2.6, it's pretty advanced, with captions and what have you. But there are some crazy things which should be changed, and can be easily done so.

    • There isn't a tick-box to choose whether you want to have a caption or not. There should be. If you want to specify an alt attribute, you've got to have a caption as well.
    • Why is the caption the same as the alt attribute? If you're using a screenreader or text-only browser or what have you, you'll have the same thing read out twice!
    • Why is the title compulsory, but the alt not? Surely it should be the other way round. The W3C makes an alt attribute compulsory for a reason, and why have it empty if the title is being used?
    • Roughly how the set-up should be in my opinion: The "title" field, compulsory as ever, is used to specify what should go in the alt attribute. Then, there's a "description"/"caption"/whatever field, optional, used to set the title attribute, and - if the user checks the relevant box - the caption.

Please, please, please consider implementing these suggestions. It will make my WP experience so much better. It's the only bad thing about WP currently.

this has been suggested a few times already (do a search). i would have thought WordPress would have sorted this issue with 2.61? In the mean time none of my images have alt tags and so they don't validate!

I've done a search, and I can't find other any mentions of this.

Your images will have alt attributes (no such thing as alt "tags") anyway, but they'll just be, like, alt="", and still validate. It's just that you're forced to set a title attribute, madly, even though an alt attribute value is more important to have.

I'm using 2.6.2 and if I don't add a caption, it doesn't add an empty ALT tag. Therefore, my code is invalid. Seems like such a weird thing to do that the title is compulsory, but not the ALT tag.

Alt and caption are now separate fields.
