Integrate the best plugin ideas into the core product

I don't think there are many plugins that should be pushed into core, but I think a good compromise would be to have two (or more) downloads available, one being the basic WordPress core, the other being the core plus a chosen set of plugins.

Which plugins get chosen for the bloated download could be based on a popularity contest like this one.

Some new features of WordPress 2.1:

    # Our completely redone visual editor also now includes spell checking.
    # New search engine privacy option allows you take you to indicate your blog shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines like Google.
    # You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.

...all of which could have been accomplished with plugins. Don't you see?

    +1 to lambic idea

i was thinking this meanwhile reading the comments :)

there are some plugins that no one got time to install, and are very appreciated less-work for publishers and admins.

that VIPr (very important plugins repository™) may be shiped with wp-core, and mantained by wp devs.

    IMHO :))

No, why should everything be included? Plugins that really are of interest for any user could be pre-added to the installation as it has been with akismet

Not everything, just what counts. As previously stated, "Plugin popularity is also a way of identifying desired features."

Yes. I want SOME plugin functionality included in the core. There's no need to include every plugin, but several could be added. For example, WordPress shouldn't require plugins to display videos from Youtube/Dailymotion/Google Video/whatever.

An enhancement to the Download engine could make most people happy... though admittedly it's a much more complicated download process:

Select the plugins you want and have them put into your download package when you pick up the latest version of WP. If each plugin has an install script, a temp folder could be created to do the code mods, and the appropriate DB calls appended to the installation SQL calls.

This may not work with ALL plugins, but it would certainly work with some...

Nooooo! Don't ever do this! I'm tired of Microsoft philosophy. Spend time improving the plugin directory instead...

how about this, if you have to use plugins make them very very very very functional in other words - make them do more than just one specific function,

ideal scenario, the average uses only needs lets say 5 totally functional plugins to do just about anything they could ever dream of, then if people want to do more then can add more plugins,

i find several plugins that are very similar and could be merged into one great one, come on people think :)

installing one plugin that only does a tiny function is such a waste, make it do something

and amateur plugin makers, please stop making plugins just because it's your first time and you're in a rush to pop your cherry, make a good plugin a functional one and not something that only does one tiny thing and it comes with 3-5 files pleaseZZZ
