If a transition from TinyMCE is to be made, it must be a simultaneous solution. Let's say some new 'Easy Editor' is added to the fold, it would have to be a new tab that coexists with the TinyMCE and HTML views. Converting from TinyMCE in one release could literally bring the WordPress world to its knees.

As much as I see the need for a new editor, it scares me to imagine how that transition can happen.

I have several computer-illiterate clients. TinyMCE baffles them constantly and leads to some poorly formatted posts. I must admit that I have to get creative to get it to do what I want sometimes too.

Overall, I see more pitfalls with this change than benefits at the current time.

    Yikes!

Though the OP is quite old, I still think this is really necessary. The editor is outdated and has some nasty bugs like the line break bug. I work with non-professional bloggers a lot, and I see that the TinyMCE editor simply doesn't work like it should work.

We're updating tinyMCE in 3.5, but it really boils down to a lack of sustainable, accessibility friendly, options :/

@Pittan: Me too as long as it's user-friendly and doesn't bog down resources.

I agree with the need for better table editing functionality. As well, I have noticed a few other items mentioned specifically in the post.

For the meantime - I just installed the Ultimate TinyMCE plugin yesterday which helps you add an icon to work with the tables, although it only seemed to offer one option which puts all the 7-8 icons for table controls inside of a popout menu vs. I would prefer if they were all listed in a row. Still a slight improvement from where it was at.

@ mcsolas, Ultimate TinyMCE does put some extra weight to blogs in the form of loading extra resources, so it would still be a good idea to implement this idea..

  9. I'm even suggesting we can use regular expression to match all the styles attributes and dispatch them within different styles .class
Somehow, the HTML output code, whenever the user does a copy - paste from Microsoft Word or just type it regulary in TinyMCE concludes in some "non-clean" code like empty <div>'s to make a <br> carriage return and so ..

There's a Paste From Word button on the visual editor toolbar already. The problem there is Word puts in non-clean code on its own (seriously have you seen their idea of good HTML? Iiiiiick). That's a very different thing.
