Improved handling of categories in already published posts

I'm a frequent poster, and sometimes I post with either Windows Live Writer or from my cell phone. When I do this, I usually tend to forget to include the categories, which means I have to go and set the categories afterwards in admin.

A small annoyance is that you have to open each post to set the categories, and I'd like to see a method where you could mass-set categories at once. For instance, if one could set 10 posts to a specific category at once.

I'm using WP as CMS to migrate a site originally made with the old handcrafted style (page by page with a text editor and/or FrontPage). After installing and customizing WP, the first mass-migration of content was relatively "easy": I included the content of each page in a SQL script, then execute it and the site is up and running.

But I have the same problem: I must go and open each post to set the categories. Today there are near 400 posts and more content (more specific) need to be loaded. I'm losing too much time entering each post to set the categories.

The same: I'd like (I really love) to see a method where you could mass-set categories at once. Maybe the way the users roles are set is a good start.

Yeah, there's many reasons why you would want to work with a batch of categories at once, and I really think that an improved method of handling them is in order.

Absolutely. Mass-setting categories for a bunch of posts at once would also help if I want to change my categories.

I totally agree. As a former Blogger user I imported a 700+ post blog and would love to have a mass category update feature.

I'm working with about 9000 posts across 140 categories.
Problem; For some reason, my categories tables got fouled. I managed to get things going again, but messed up the categories table.
I'd like to be able to do a text search in the posts... and assign them to a set of categories.

Examples, since this is the political season, I'll give two:
I'd like to be able to assign posts containing Fred Thompson, let's say, to categories "Republican", and "Elections"
You can imagine that going through 9000 posts plus is going to be a long project...

I agree! How come noone has invented such a plugin or integrated this feature into WP allready? It's possible to do with tags, so why not categories?

Even better, why can't we have a plugin that after publishing, searches the post for words or word combinations that are in our list of categories and then automatically check the appropriate categories for us?

It may not be 100% accurate, but it would sure be a time saver. I have 1,000 posts without categories listed and I'm not about to go through each one and scroll up and down my already long category list to find the appropriate categories.

I have a site with more then 4000 categories, which is still based on WordPress 2.2. I'm managing this amount of categories using an old plugin by Alex King called "Category Overload", which unfortunately doesn't work on newer WP versions. Anyway it makes a very useful work, which could be developed in future versions.
