Improve WordPress registration

Blacklisting is not a full solution. It is reactive rather than proactive in the sense that it only catches domains you tell it too. My spam registrations come fr. a wide variety of domains, not fr. one or 2. I want a feature that forces all subscribers to register & prove they are human. I don't want to have to worry about predicting which domains bots will use & blacklisting those only to have others get through.

If Viper007Bond knows of a plugin that does this pls. let me know.

And hacks are great & I appreciate them but...if you hack a critical wp file you're gonna have to reinstall yr hack every time you upgrade WP, which is a bit of a hassle.

You're right. If I had the expertise and time, I'd pluginify my hack - but I have too many other things on. So no immortalising myself through a Really Useful Plugin. However here is a link to a post with a hack in for 2.1.

Yes. Admin should be able to moderate in an open registration.

I agree. I've spent the better part of the last 3 days looking for something to cut down on spambot registrations. The comments are easy to nix, and my current set of installed plugins nip 98% of those in the bud right off. All I need now is something to help keep the riffraff from registering in the first place (when disabling registration is NOT an option).

I agree with eleni2! User moderation is an essential feature! Any more luck with this?

Does anybody know whether the Math plugin could woork for the registration, or if there's another similar plugin which would provide the same effect?

The issue of registration spam is growing and as this is an IDEA for improving WordPress, it may be a good idea to add some form into the WordPress code to incorporate Akismet or a CAPTCHA device to help stop registration spam.

Blacklisting doesn't work. CAPTCHAs are also fairly ineffective if your blog is truly under assault, and it won't stop the growing number of human spammers, but it may help slow them down, especially if used in combination with Akismet.

Currently, I've only found a few hacks (already mentioned) and Plugins for contact forms and nothing that directly responds to registration spam. A Plugin would be nice, but this issue covers any WordPress blogger with more than one blogger, registration for comments or contribution, and private blogs. That's a huge audience.

I vote for adding this to the to do list for WordPress features.

Unless I'm mistaken, the problem lies with the email address being used by WP to communicate with registrants. While a CAPTCHA device would be an elegant solution -- and I hope that happens! -- I'd be almost as happy with a separate email address such as no-reply@myblog.com.
