Implement all system emails in HTML, improve look and feel

The emails WordPress sends out haven't changed in years and year, while the web UI has evolved considerably.

Why is it that the comment approval email is so hard to read? Why do I have to click approve twice when I approve a comment from email? Why aren't all the emails in HTML format?

Why is the registration email so boring?

There's a big opportunity to look at the email UI and bring it up to the standard of the rest of the WordPress UI.

    Cheers,

    Gabe

I think this might be the work of some plugin, as HTML means lots of image that can't be load by email client.

I don't think HTML necessarily means using images.

And images are used very frequently in HTML formatted email communications, so I don't see why there should be a restriction on not using images anyway.

This is a good idea in general but think of this - your clients might want to have all registration related emails (post registration welcome message, password reset etc) to fit their site design, have their logo instead of WP logo etc. So we need html emails to be themeable. I'm not sure what's the best way to do it, maybe to have additional email-{type}.php template in your theme's directory? Maybe this belongs to a plugin territory?

I like the idea of a custom template. I think only one template would be needed though - with a few template tags that are automatically populated by WordPress.
