"Even nicer would be ... some type of edit interface that allows the user to determine which part of the image is to be thumbnailed."

    Definitely!

Couple things related to this. Yes the 2.5.x interface is much improved over it's predecessors but it needs to allow 100% editing of an images stored options (ie: paths, etc). The method of storage needs to be separated from regular posts as well in MySQL (ie: put them in their own table). I'd also be a proponent of seeing them stored with a more relative path vs. the hard full domain path (makes changing this a pita).

I would add that image handling is one of the worse things with wordpress. I delayed launch of 2.6 on my site until I was sure that the imagemanager plugin which CAN handle creation of directories was able to be used.

I'm usually not in favor of such things being added to the core of WordPress because I like WordPress to be lean and compact, however, I feel that images are as much a part of blogging as the words themselves - in some instances, more so. Such easy imagining options and flexibility would indeed be a welcome addition to WordPress.

I particularly like the idea of selective thumbnailing. My only concern is how much of a drain this would be on the speed of WordPress and how much it would bulk up the upload process with additional files.

I am fairly new to all of this, but is it possible to imbed HTML into the image to make them clickable as well? I am using wordpress to build a site at the moment and I am very green at all of this. I want to build my front page and include a blog as well but not sure where I should be heading.
    Cheers

I really want it to be more sophisticated on thumnailing, so that i decide it on the fly and it shows up well. sometimes the ajax box doesn't work for me, it just hangs and forces me to close the window. i hate it...

  9. I really think there needs to be a balance between keeping WordPress lean and compact (making sure speed is not compromised) and adding more features to the image uploader.

If this could be done in a "middle of the road" sort of way I think it would be a great idea.
