how about ability to sort media by saving them into folders when uploading?

Yes, separate folders for photos and videos will be better for us to manage; specially when the blog grows over time, older post management will be easier. We may require same image or video as reference to another post.

I use WP as my CMS to publish computer-related articles, each full of pictures, all of them spread between multiple categories. Often I have to add/remove pictures, change dimensions etc. It is not easy to browse thru 1000s pictures stored in single folder, and the ability to store them in separate folders of my choice will be incredibly valuable.

There could be huge improvements to the media library. Folders would be a really great addition to the platform.

Much needed facility on WP, I mean these days people upload so much stuff and it would defo taking it more towards the cloud computing era.

I can't stand the current way the wordpress handles images. Images are one of the most major pain in the behind parts of wordpress right now. This way of user managed folders would be perfect.

All improvements to the media library would be appreciated, when you start to get many images it gets messy and hard to keep structure.

I vote for this too! Especially once you have more than a dozen images.

With the each update, especially to WP3 and things like post thumbnails (which need one uniform name, not featured image etc. incidentally), I am amazed that image management hasn't been implemented.

The NextGen Gallery does this image management and folder structure beautifully. I'm not in any way affiliated with this plugin, but it is an example of how brilliant image management can work. There are one or two interface issues with it, but they are minor. You can add/move/copy/tag/search/include/exclude photos and even add further features with other plugins, such as voting and image comments.

It keeps an original copy and allows you to resize, rotate and crop thumbnails too.

There is only one caveat with this plugin functionality as it is, and that is that if you use one of the images from an NG gallery as a Featured Image, it often does not work in thumbnail based theme display and slideshows. I've never got to the bottom of this issue and currently I have to (or tell clients to) upload some pics twice, once in the NG gallery and once in the Media library - just to work the post thumbnail.

I agree that WP needs to have this sort of functionality built in. I have often thought that if it did, this would be close to the perfect way to implement it. I've often thought that WP should take this plugin as the start point. Or, to be able to 'switch off' the Media menu item and replace with this.
