how about ability to sort media by saving them into folders when uploading?

One major hurdle I have with the media gallery is that all images/video/photo's are displayed on the same level when accessing the media manager.

I would like to have the ability to create folders to place my media into when I upload the media. Also have the ability to later move media if I so choose to. --obviously have to maintain 'link' to posts even though the path would have changed.

    Example:
One of my sites has over 250k photo's, not wordpress. I can't even imagine trying to manage that much media in a single folder view. That alone keeps me from using wp for myh photo sites.

I also like to upload media via my custom plugins or theme options panel into the media gallery. Being able to save template images into a template foler would be nice. I dread the day that one of my 'mini admins' decides to go through and delete older images that are not attached to posts, not realizing they are theme images.

    1) Being able to save template images into a template foler would be nice.

That's what your, you know, template folder is for. Theme images should be packaged with the theme, not in the Media Gallery.

    2) One of my sites has over 250k photo's, not wordpress. I can't even imagine trying to manage that much media in a single folder view. That alone keeps me from using wp for myh photo sites.

Have you tried NextGen Gallery plugin for managing photos? I use it for my photo collection - 2GB and counting.

I would like to define upload areas by page and or post type.

This is the main thing keeping me from using WordPress to run my whole site. I've got 200 or so image heavy static pages that I'd like to convert and use going forward, but I don't want to have those image files mixed in with four years of blog images.

Having separate upload areas by post type would be helpful. I realize this is pushing WordPress past it's designed purpose, but it's frustrating because WordPress is so flexible and perfect up to a point, but I just can't get the last mile out of it for what I want to do.

The ability to upload files to different folders has to be a basic requirement.

I have a site that has sets of images e.g. a base image, a rollover, a button etc. These need to be stored together in the same folder. If images are stored by year/month, then I can't add to a set from a previous month. The only option is to store ALL images in one folder - the uploads folder - which results in a long list of images that is hard to work with.

A possible workaround is to store all images in Uploads as described above then prefix all images with the name of the folder that you would have stored them in.

    nature-bird.jpg
    nature-tree.jpg
    travel-car.jpg
    travel-train.jpg
    etc

However, this doesn't help because the WordPress Media Library doesn't allow you to sort by image file name, or even see the image file name in the list. It's not one of the 'Screen options'.

    Thanks!

    I support this idea too!

Additionally, I'd like to suggest the ability to use image size as a suffix, instead of the image's dimensions.

    Yes! I'd like to choose a folder for uploads /blog /video-thumbnails /recipes

And I'd also like to be able to set the upload folders to be *outside* the directory in which WordPress is installed! Maybe this is possible already via settings > media, but *nothing* works that I've tried using WP 3.0. The full URL doesn't work, and a relative URL (../img) doesn't either!

I a gree with anointed. Beingable to upload images into folders should be basic functionality.

I have a custom field called "related image".

I would love to be able to open a folder and select image to be associated to my post / page.

I think media tags will be better solution then folders.
