High quality print output

I'd like a way to output a blog entry as high quality, hard copy. My current template isn't optimized for printing (yeah, I'll have to learn about that...), which means my header graphic doesn't print out, and my hard copy doesn't look anything like the on-screen style sheet.

Ideally, what I'd like to see is a way to output an entry as say, an Acrobat or Illustrator file, where elements (graphics, header, footer, sidebar, etc) can be output to a file. Each element can be further be positioned, scaled, anchored, etc, like a desktop publishing app.

Further wishful thinking: a high res, print quality image can be inserted into this file, in place of the low res, web quality image.

Am I asking for too much?

not the job of wordpress imho. there already are some pdf-plugins but i don't see any wide range of people needing this. the same goes for high resolution stuff.

normal printing stuff can perfectly be managed with css.

It's an excellent suggestion that would seemingly take little effort on the part of the developers. A nice little bell/whistle in my opinion.

I've often thought that a book organized by Category or Chronology would make a very cool coffee table addition. Including images would be difficult due to so many plug-in versions and techniques.

I agree that this isn't really that which WordPress should be responsible. That's what css and media-specific style sheets are for. Here's some ideas to get you started: http://alistapart.com/articles/hiresprinting/

I would love to see a downloadable pdf generated on the fly that you can pull a post or catagory or the whole blog if you want.. maybe even by time such as from such and such a date to another date. I started to use the pages feature to use for writing a book but without a way to print them in sequence and a versioning system it just didn't work well.

This should be handled by print stylesheets, not something core to WordPress. Adding print stylesheet examples to the default templates would perhaps be worthwhile so people who aren't familiar with them have a place to start.

I was going to link to the ALA article, but douglsmith has taken care of it already. This is definitely theme-level functionality, and can easily be accomplished by print stylesheets and the techniques outlined in the ALA article.

This is not something WordPress should take on. It's a theme template and or plugin area.
