Why not let a post be "friends only" or "family only".

Flickr can do it. Vox can do it.

    We can too.

If you can't wait, there are a few plugins that can do this for you -- like mine :)

I still wouldn't mind having this in though :)

fil, does your plugin really allow you to say who of your subscribers is family or friends and then restrict posts to either family or friends or both?

    P.S. Same idea posted here:

It would be nice if the title and such could show. I've tried that plugin and have not been able to get it to work - it always throws some parsing error that I've not been able to work out. But can it filter properly. I just want to be able to, well, here, follow this thread:

One way this feature could be implemented, maybe, would be to provide the ability to subdivide the "Subscriber" role into sub-roles of your choosing, such as "Family" and "Friends," and then the ability to allow those sub-roles to read certain posts.

I'd *really* like this feature... I came here from LiveJournal (where you can set up as many post access filters as you want) and am having a hard time getting into my WP journal until I find a comparable solution. I'd settle for the family/friends/public option..

This just what Role Manager + Category Visibility achieve, but this feature should really be an integral part of WordPress.

We need to choose what to show to
    - the public, not subscriber
    - the public, subscriber
    - partner organizations
    - members of our organization
    - staff/inner circle
    - board
    - administrators

I tried Role Manager but couldn't get it to do what I wanted.

Also, there's ticket on WordPress trac for this feature:

  10. I abandoned the development of a WP plugin for showing posts based on users' roles / post's categories. WordPress implements direct access to the content (database). It's a flexible approach, but it allows another plugin to bypass any filter put in place by my plugin, thus compromising security.

I think this is not gonna change in the future because WordPress is already a mature system, and lots of code has been developed using its database access style.
