Full Post or Excerpt

The WordPress default theme (like 2010) shows the full content on its front page. Even themes released by Automattic is designed in such a manner.

There is no option in the WordPress backend whereby it can be defined that the front page should contain excerpt.

Moreover, with themes getting more complex - with different models of php structure being used, its really difficult to find as to how to make the excerpt show on the front page.

(WordPress themes - even those released by automattic - are becoming phppress)

It would be really nice - if there is an option in the WordPress backend options eg. in "READING" options where one can define whether one wants full posts or the excerpt on the front page.

    thanks

Great idea! I'm all for this.

I feel like this used to be an option or something :/ Maybe it was when I used Blogger.

Such option should be there for archives and search page also along with the front page

This is really theme territory as some themes display excerpts and full posts in completely different manners that would not be controllable via an admin option. There are simply too many scenarios where this would break themes.

I'm looking for a way to display the full post only IF the post contains less than 460 characters. Anything else (460 characters or more), I want to show the excerpt. I want this to be true for the homepage and all category pages.

How would I do this? Thanks!

I guess, the themes follow the core, and not the other way round. There has previously been functions that were originally plugin ideas, but gradually became part of core.

It is unfortunate, that most of the theme developers do not provide such functionality of excerpt leave alone any theme option.

The problem becomes acute, because, unlike previous times, now, there is no standardisation of the the files that the themes may have. So different themes use their own sets of files and file names.

And more than that such files may contain different kinds of functions.

All these makes even hacking (customising) these files a difficult task! (And I guess, WP stands for easier CMS / blogging)

It is because of this that such functionality is required in the WP core.

    thanks
