Back long ago I uploaded a lot of images in wp, and some by ftp, Later for many reasons wp crashed and I reinstalled, then the db got wonked. made new installation and so on. The upshort is that those hundreds of images are still in the wp-content/uploads/2007/03 folders (an example only). Unless I manually link to them, there is no way to access them through the Media Library (which does not recognize their existence).

Is there anyway to code a future release which allows the Media Library to read the actual contents of the entire unloads folder - to include those files not uploaded via the current installation of WP and related db?

You could check out the Import Legacy media plugin here:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/import-legacy-media/

Once installed, you go into Manage > Import and click Import Legacy media

You then tick off the boxes you want to import, and it imports everything selected into the Media Library.

Yes, it will be tedious, because I don't think it's a recursive tool, but it did save me LOTS of time when migrating a Joomla installation to WordPress.
