    I think pagemash addresses this...

    However, I think any such solution should also include the ability to toggle the view of parent pages and categories to view or hide subpages or sub-cats...

    pagemash doesn't do that.

    I've just released a new version of pageMash which now supports full recursive support for child pages. It allows you to drag the pages to into a new order and change the page structure by dragging to different parents. It also gives the option to toggle the page hiding.

    I'd appreciate any feedback, but I agree it should really be built into wordpress.

    I'm usually against adding stuff to the core, but this is an absolutely requirement for blogging software that aims to be intuitive and easy to use. Why the current ordering interface (a quick and dirty coder's solution) has survived since the earliest versions is a great mystery to me.
