Don't make image alt tags conditional on displying a caption

This is similar to this idea...

    Why?
According to good xhtml we should have alt tags for every image - but if we do, we get captions... we don't need captions and they are very often not wanted.

So... Don't make image alt tags conditional on displaying a caption

Agreed. If I want a caption, then give me an option to add one, but do not tie it to the alt tag. They should be separated and be considered two completely different entities, which they technically are.

I totally agree. I don't want to enter the alt tag manually in the post or remove the [caption] part all the time.

I totally agree here as well. It should be easy enough to have an Alt Tag entry box in the image uploader, and then a checkbox to decide if you want the alt tag to be used as the caption on a per-image basis.

I have seen ways to turn off the captions entirely, which I will probably have to do, but it would be nice to have an option on the fly instead of blog-wide.

Yeep... Captions under the images are destroying entire layout in some blogs (mine for example), and without Alt tags images are worthless for the search engines - please, make it an option.

Any info or reply on this great request? Seems obvious to those of us who use images regularly.

I agree entirely. I've just upgraded to 2.8.5 and this still isn't implemented, so unless I use captions my gallery pages don't validate.

This seems pretty fundamental to me, so I'm wondering why it's not being implemented.

It would seem the best solution would be to automatically populate the alt text, but allow the user to edit it, much like the current title text.

In the meantime, does anyone know how to change the code (in media.php I think) to force the gallery function to use the content of the title tag as the alt text, if no caption is available? I've spent hours staring at the code but can't make head nor tail of it.

    This was implemented in 2.9.
