Disable user accounts

There are situations when there is a need to disable user accounts without deleting them. Currently, there is an plugin that does this but I believe such feature should be in the core of WordPress, just like how user creation is.

Please consider including this feature in WordPress. Thank you.

It is not a core feature that everyone needs - it therefore should be a plugin not core feature. WordPress is the core engine with essential things only and a very extensible api which allows everything else to be plugins.

I think you can just set the user role to "No role for this site" and that should ideally take all the rights away.

I simply do not understand why they haven't already included ban IP's into the system either. Come on` get a grip.

Banning IPs is not a very useful technique, due to the way IPs change frequently (like if you use a cellphone, or change computers, or reboot your router, or use a proxy service).

You can block IPs from commenting mind you, and if you want to ban users on your blacklist from registering, on a single WP install you can use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ban-hammer/

For MultiSite, there's a built in 'ban' feature (which I wish would make it to single-site).

jcnetsys, I respectfully disagree, disabling accounts should be a core feature. Although there are quite a few sites that may not think they need this, every site with more than one user potentially needs it. Accounts get compromised every day, or start behaving oddly. Employees leave or change departments. Accounts go unused for long periods of time.

Go to Edit in user profile and change role to " - No role for this site - " to disable a user without deleting them. If they try to log in at this point, they will get a message that they do not have permissions to view this page.

Maybe it could say ... "No role for this site/disable user"
