Date navigation instead of number of posts

When I started blogging I used Movable Type and it had a simple way to navigate between months of posts. The last five years I never found a way to do this in WordPress, unless by using a plugin called nextprevious archive posts, which doesn't work with permalinks.

Why not create two new functions: next_archive_posts() and previous_archive_posts(), just like the next_posts_link etc.? These then should work with all the date types: weekly posts, monthly posts etc.

Those two new functions you mention can be easily created by a plugin.

    Then please do! :)
I don't know how and at the moment there is no plugin that can.

Open source is usually a "scratch my own itch" type of thing, so I won't be writing this plugin until I find a use for it myself.

I currently use Smart Archives Reloaded for displaying year and month links.

Very nice plugin, this smart archives reloaded. I'm using it too now. But... when I click on 'view entire month' and I'm redirected to june 2009, it would be very nice if i could choose next month or previous month from there instead of having to load the entire archive page again ;)

You can: Use <?php smart_archives('format=menu'); ?> in your month archive template.
