Create yearly archive

I have been using for quite some time and therefore have a fairly long list of archive entries. Since the old entries are not necessarily that important (and they would also be listed in my categories) I would very much WP to show the archive like this:

    2007:
    July
    June
    April (etc)

    2006
    2005
    2004 (etc)

If I press "2006" I would simply be showed all entries from that year.

This has probably already been suggested, but I can't seem to find it...

This was a huge problem for us when we used wordpress as a logging system internally, and as a security logging system for a clients worldwide companies (blog publication is perfect for that). Never got a work around, just have been dealing with the monthly archive - but I think it's a necessity as blogging continues to grow, 'yearly' archive will be extremely important!

Guys, this is built into WordPress out of the box, already. If you use pretty permalinks you can just put the year on the "Date" permalink (i.e. go to your monthly archive and delete the /07/ month from the URI, leave just the year, and you will see it works).

At least it works for me, default theme! Enjoy.

As for the person wanting to list the Months then Years in your sidebar, that is just a matter of writing the code to show it that way. I show just 10 recent post titles, then all the past years in my sidebar.

-- Well this isn't really discussed here, is it?

-- Off course it's just a matter of writing the code. The purpose of suggestion something to someone is to ask for help. I don't know how to do it, else how I would have done it myself. I'm not asking for ten recent posts, I'm asking for the archive to be more intelligent.

As Dgold mentioned, this is not only possible but relatively straightforward in WP. See
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags
in particular the "date-based differences" section for an idea of how this might be done.

This is the kind of customization I'd expect to see at the theme level rather than in the WP engine.
