Create a better plugin-database

I dont want to quibble and dont want to underestimate the work the guys at http://wp-plugins.net/ put into the database and page, but searching a plugin is a real pain in the ass.

What I'd like to see is a fully searchable, categorizable, up-to-date database of plugins integrated into http://www.wordpress.org

    Things I could imagine:

    • Integrated with WordPress.org useraccounts
    • Add plugins anonymously, show them on page after validation by 1/2/x common users (to prevent spam)
(could feature a "pending additions" view for logged-in wordpress.org users)
    • Support for tags
    • Fields for Author, website, Plugin Name, Description, installatation and usage of the plugin
      (ever found a link to a plugin that's dead? :( )
    • Option to upload 1-2 images for screenshots
    • upload zipfile with plugin

I entirely agree about it easier to search for plugins. I am very new to WordPress so a lot of the time I am not especially sure exactly what I should be looking for, so possibly more explanation of the plugins that are available. However, I think that the ones I have found are super, well done!

I like it... more feature requests:

    + user based rating system

    + remember my downloads

Right on! I've been spoiled by Textpattern Resources. That and Firefox Add-Ons are both great examples of well-done "extend your software" catalog sites.

I'd add a field or two for what versions of WP this plugin works for, and what other plugins are known to have problems with it if they run at the same time.

This is our plugins database, which has most of the features you list here:

a gold start list of only the very best, functional, up to date plugin that actually works would be nice too :)

The plugin database should also record as a category/tag the version of word press it has been designed for. I am sick and tied of downloading plugins that were designed for an earlier version of WordPress and in many cases just re-invent the wheel or have been replaced in more recent versions.

An indication if the feature is now available in the latest version would also help... BUT MOST OF ALL THE VERSION NUMBER. The same goes to Word Press Themes.
