Comment Spam Security Check

It would be great to integrate spam security into the comment box on the front end to stop the endless spam. WP should integrate one of those generated images of letters and numbers that visitors would have to type into a form box for their comment to be submitted.

Even though we have Akismet to stop spam, spambots still can submit comments. When spambots find your site they multiply quickly and it affects your site statistics and obviously can affect your bandwidth. Even if there is a plugin for this, which I haven't found, it would great for WP to integrate it ... after all WP is for blogging.

I Don't like the idea of generating those images ("captcha") you have to "decrypt" to comment in a blog. I don't know if something like bad behavior would be suitable.

I hate those "captcha" boxes. It usually takes me 3 or 4 tries to figure out what's in them.

And there is one out there as a plugin for WP but when I installed it, my regulars couldn't post comments to my blog and complained so I took it out.

However, I agree that some sort of spam blocker needs to be part of WP's core. As it is, I use Bad Behavior, SK2, and Anti-Leach and I still have problems with spam and websites stealing my content.

So you make the "captcha" boxes easier for humans to read, that is an easy solution to the issue you (dimension and nmallory) raise. You dont just pan the idea outright because someone else executed it poorly.

You would still rather deal with hundreds of spam comments daily??? That would be incredibly shortsighted.

I absolutely hate CAPTCHAs. Those who disagree with me can use a plugin. Don't put them in the core of WP. Please.

Also, CAPTCHAs are easily defeatable by spammers, and having a particular sort of them included by default in hundreds of WP installations would be all of the incentive the spammers need to make them worthless.

mmoncur - you can make this optional!!

Captchas do work. Akismet and Behavior do not prevent spambots from screwing up your analytics/statistics, taking up bandwidth, and wasting your time.

I'm using the math plugin i found somewhere. Akismet kept letting spam come through and placed my regulars into the spam box - but since I installed the math plugin there has been NO spam, and NO false positives!

I would be happy to see a system like that as an option in WP - like it is in Blogger. You could then turn it on if you wanted to - or not.

I'd rate this with five stars, but the system won't let me :(
(now it did - in IE. Didn't work at FF)

I'd rather have the spammers just submit one comment and then move onto the next site than have them repeatedly pound at the captcha until they get it right.
