I think WordPress should have, by default, an option to "follow" certain comments to posts, sending notification to the author of a comment, when yours is answered, just like here in the forum.

Seriously. WordPress.com is using the same software we are, mostly, and they use the same plugins. The reason this stuff isn't built in, is that not everyone wants or needs this. There is a plugin that is, in fact, made by WordPress (called Jetpack) that is exactly what they use on their site, converted to work on as many of ours as possible.
So. No. Use the plugin :) not everything should be in core.

MemberHi Miriam & Ipstenu -- the core or plugin issue aside, I'd like people who leave a comment to be able to get an email that their comment was replied to (if they want one)
As far as I can see, neither WP.org core, nor the Jetpack plugin do this. If you use Jetpack AND you're logged in, it can use the notification bubble to tell you.
But if someone who isn't an active WP user visits and comments, I don't see a way for them to get an email that their discussion has been advanced, except by replacing the whole comment system with an alternate, like Disqus or Cackle etc
Am I missing anything?
(you could check "notify me of follow up comments" - but I think this isn't ideal, 1 - because you now get ALL comments to that post, not just to your own comment thread, and 2 - if you click that but take 3 hours to wander over to your email and say you really meant it, meanwhile your comment was replied to in 10 minutes, then you'll never get a message about that reply)
