Stop closing unanswered forum topics. Let people contribute answers. Or am I missing something? Thanks!

Depends on how old the topic is. If it's over a year old, it gets closed.

If there is a question posted that doesn't get any traffic to answer it in a year, there must be something wrong. Either with the forum software for not getting the topic in front of people, or with the community for not responding. IMHO of course.

But what benefit is there to closing topics in any case?

I agree with LinuxArchitect, if the topic is still visible, i.e. not deleted or archived, after a year, it doesn't make any sense to close it. I don't think any storage is saved by closing the topic, and unless there is some hidden overhead like someone administrating it, closing a topic will only make someone interested in it to open a new one duplicating the original.

I agree, keep old topics open. I wanted to post an answer to an old topic but it was closed. I don't want to open a duplicate topic, so the question remains unanswered.

I agree it is so annoying that you find a topic and cannot respond or add to it. The forums are out of control and incredibly confusing and lots of the stuff is either old hat or not workable

Right before I close this topic, I want to explain WHY.

Support posts are closed after a year becuase so much has changed in a year, it's unlikely that the exact same scenario still exists. This is an automatic process and will not be changed.

We also manually close posts when they've outlived their usefulness, and have started to attract either spam or off-topic comments.

Finally I'm closing THIS post because it's not a WordPress core suggestion :)

I wanted to post an answer to an old topic but it was closed. I don't want to open a duplicate topic, so the question remains unanswered.

I really wish you HAD made your own topic, with a link back to the closed one, saying how to fix it. Please do that next time :) We encourage it.
