central theme directory

I think you should do with themes what you did with the plugin directory: centralize it. Most of the good themes aren't on the theme viewer, and lately the theme viewer has been broken, poorly updated, and very limited in scope.

Include a default popular posts widget in each installation. People love aggregated content. You could also take it a step further and provide most popular posts based on the same content tags, kind of like a built-in delicious.

nobody who's 'officially connected' to wordpress has the time to run a central directory. it will become polluted in the same way that themes.wordpress.net has been.

also, many of the 'heavyweight' themes (k2, tarski, fauna) aren't on the themeviewer because the themeviewer doesn't work with every theme, and it's not easy to update. extend/plugins is kept up to date by SVN, but most designers haven't mastered SVN, so you'll wind up with a (different) subset of themes not being present.

having an official themeviewer won't ever replace themebot, or themes.blogflux.com, because different directories will always have different strengths, that will appeal to different designers.

Also, any wordpress.org-based respository would only accept GPL-compatible themes. That immediately knocks out any theme created with CC-licenced content -- that is, most stock photos, artwork and icons -- unless people decide to relicence other people's artistic content without asking them. WP might be cool with that but I think most of the design community would have problems with it.

Considering how broken themes.wordpress.net is, this is a great idea.

I am missing another thing on the themes directory: I cannot see which themes are localizable (having .pot files coming with them).

A central theme repo is now accessible from the admin tool.
