Central plugin and theme repository

WordPress should have a central theme and plugin repository maintained by the primary maintainers of WP - not by anyone.

This way we could have central update notifications, compatibility states and stuff like this. This would totalls improve modifying WP. Also the plugin repository e.g. could have a standardized documentation template. Reading the docs and following instructions could still be easier.

s9y also has an automated installer out of the central repository - maybe this would also be an idea.

at 1 release per year do you really think the developers have time to maintain a theme+plugin repository as well?

They can delegate someone to do it if they decide they want an official repository... Probably someone who is already doing it independently. The idea of an official repository is cool, but more important than how official any repositories are is the ease of using them.

Heh, there is already an official repository. According to http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

    it is http://themes.wordpress.net/

    There should be browsable categories.

  9. The one thing I do really like about helmi's idea is the "compatibility states" thing. I've lost count of the amount of times I've upgraded and my plugins have broken.

In fact, many times I would have never upgraded had I of known my plugins would have broken because at times it's really left me stuck.

Centralized (and censored) repository will become a necessity because of the growing danger of malicious code used in plugins. Sooner we have it the better.
