Breakup Import/Export Functions

I have searched around the ideas forum here, but I didn't find anything. With the ever increasing size of blogs out there, the import/export functions may start running into size issues. I would like to suggest that we implement a way to break up the files either by a date range or through categories. Right now, large export files need to be manually broken up through a text editor. I have one blog that is about a 8 meg file that chokes most text editors ;)

The date range would be my favorite. Just my 2 cents.

One more thing, this could be fixed with a plugin, but would be more consistent if it was a core fix so even services like wordpress.com could have this implemented.

date range would be great, or categories, or pages vs. posts.

pages are especially problematic, since you can't change the author without delving into PHPMyAdmin

also, it would be great if export files didn't include spam comments, as they're often 75%+ of the file size.

I maintain several different sites and would love to see a date range, categories and Pages vs Posts. The page is pain in the butt. Every time I export I have to manually delete page entries.

We'd actually like to see the importers come out of core and be a core plugin. Maybe someone will pick this up for a GSoC project and include the breaking up of files. I can see how it would be useful, especially on shared hosting.
