Better members / user area

Better user controls, being able to hide everything from the user or show what ever you want to the user. I find it very bad that the user can access the dashboard, media and so on, maybe i just want the user to access the profile area and maybe private messaging and such features. I think this should be built into wordpress, this is just basics if you´re going to allow people to subscribe. And have the option of redirecting users, to send the user to the front page or directly to the profile or forum or what ever, this is such a small feature but a huge one! I don´t want to rely on plugins for this as this is so basic, this really should be built into wordpress.

what's the problem with using a plugin?

The problem is that, there is no proper member plug in, i´ve tested most of them, mingle, symposium and so on, and non of them work properly, there is always something wrong... mingle isn´t supported enough (there seams to be no development going on, it has still some bugs to fix), Symposium is on a great start but it´s still way of, not refined enough, that seems to be with all the other plug ins, members area plugins seem to be too hard to make and maintain, so if there is going to be a subscribe system and a profile area in wordpress, then at least, it should be good enough to control more by default, not just, when someone subscribes, he has access to your media files, posts, dashboard and so on and you´ll have to use plugins after plugins and waste allot of time finding them to restrict access as no one can make a 100% members area / registration plug in. If i could program, i would take register plus redux and mingle or symposium and make a kick ass member area for wordpress, but i can´t so i have to rely on the community to maybe build one, but like i say, i would much rather want to see it as a default feature in wordpress, not as a "10% feature that opens up too much, have to plugin the holes so i can start to invite somebody in" kind of deal.

I´ve come a long way now regarding reasearching membership plugins from when i wrote this down, and i basically have same views as before.

Ok, there are many big and powerful membership plugins that promise gold and greener things :-p but they´re all bent on making money of users, and or user roles / user management, but few options on making custom user profiles.

Lets say i want to make a dating website, then these plugins would only get me so far as making me money, but the user woun´t have the tools to make or edit his user profile, becaue the plugin is selling some product, so the profile options are standardized and only used if you want to buy that toy you´ve bin dreaming about for some time now... what if the users are the "product" (i know it´s bad to say it like that, but for the purposes of this arguement, lets leave it at that), then i would like to have the option of making a custom profile area, and furter more, i would like it to be built into WordPress, not in a plugin as this is something so basic, or at least, i think so :-p Basically, alow the admin of the wordpress to make a custom user profile that the users can fill out for what ever purpose it might be for.

Basically, what i´m rambling on about here is; if i want a website where i can allow users to register to, i would want the option of ether, allowing the user to log on to the back end (the admin area of WordPress) or having WordPress make a custom profile post or page so the user would still be in the theme and never get into the admin area.

This is such a simple feature to have and should be in the WordPress core as i don´t want people to register to my website and have access to the admin area of my website.

The only plugins i can find where the user is not allowed into the back end (admin area) are more or less, build as a commercial plugins and thus not exactly suitable for a simple member profile solutions or if you manage to find a members plugin that isn´t a commercial members plugin, they are poorly supported and or don´t work with many themes, but in the end, this is a basic feature to have in WordPress core and then it is possible to add on commercial or social features.

BuddyPress, which is not built as 'commercial' has a pretty much entirely front end user profile area. The only 'back end' stuff would be if they needed to post blog posts.

Add in WP Hide Dashboard and a front-end login form, and the only way a user sees the back is if they, y'know, go into the back on purpose. Which I suppose you could still edit.

But this is probably always going to be plugin territory, just by the limited nature of people who would want this effect. WP is intended for users to use the back end to create content and the front to 'interact', if that makes sense.

I get your point and i see where you´re going with this, but buddypress is only for social sites, i´ve tried to integrate it into my theme (Elegant themes) and it totally messed up my theme, and so it did to my last two themes i had, so i don´t even considder it to be a valid choice if i´m considdering a members area!

You kind of made my point by saying "Add in WP Hide Dashboard and a front-end login form, and the only way a user sees the back is if they, y'know, go into the back on purpose. Which I suppose you could still edit.", this is excatly why i want a simple members area and a choice to redirect people to a members page or post, it´s just too much of an effort to get plugin after a plugin and make your worpress unstable even in the process and even then, people can enter the back end, then what is the point of all those plugins? Why not have it as i mentioned above? Simple redirect to a members page or something, core setting in WordPress?

And it´s not true that people don´t want this feature, wordpress is used for so many different things now a days and i for one, wouldvery much like a functioning members area on the front end, not the back end, i can add plugins to my website so people can add posts if that is what i want.

I didn't say (nor would I) that people don't WANT this feature.

However I will say that I doubt the majority of WordPress users require that feature. Read the WordPress Philosophy.

Without knowing the specifics of what you want, and since this is the ideas section and not support, I'm not really delving into the issue past saying it's better served as a plugin. If you'd like help finding plugins that totally block the backend and do everything on the front end, post in the support forums :)

Well, i didn´t say that you said; "...people don't WANT this feature.", i simply said that, it would be nice to have this simple feature of redirecting members from the back end into a predefined, generic members page or a post, that´s it! But don´t forget, we the users are what make wordpress work, by giving ideas on how to make it better, and weather you like it or not or, who ever doesn´t like it for that matter, wordpress is used way beyond the philosophy of what it was made out to be in the beginning, so why not make something that is already there, better? I´m not asking for a fully fetched members pages with all the bells and wistles, i´m simply asking for a feature in the wordpress core that allows for a redirect of members to the front end, i mean, why not?

If you find a plugin that solves this delima, then please tell me, i sure would like to solve this issue once and for all :)
