Better Download/Upload system

If possible, please upgrade the current file management system of wordpress. The inline upload system is working perfectly, however if we could control the download, such as how many downloads, download categories, ... just some simple functions, I believe that it could be better.

Moreover, why we don't include a Lightbox effect, when link from a thumbnail to an image, it could be really sweet for me instead of using a plugin

A plugin would allow those who don't like the bulky Prototype to use their desired JS implementations.

For instance, a Thickbox plugin, which is FAR more powerful and can also show HTML, as well as just pictures.

Even with the upload manager in WP 2.1 I think it could be better.
Like having a media/upload manager. I mean To be able IN ONE PLACE to upload/erase files in directories and sub directories, create/delete directories, browse through this, generate thumbs if needed when I want (for images uploaded via FTP for example), be abble to call this manager from the menu Write in order to include photos, music, films, files, ... with some basic functions like adding a class, size, positionning (Float, top, ...).

i want all users to be able to upload files. one user should not be able to see another user's files. but only admin (and may be editors)will be able to see all the files.

Nipon, you should take a look at Drupal.

Disclaimer: I actually like (and use) WordPress more than Drupal, but Drupal is good at this kind of stuff. At the same time, I think Drupal is a little too feature-rich, so I for one don't see the need for this to become a WP feature.

Over the years, the media manager in WordPress has received an overhaul with more work on the way. I'm pretty sure it currently does most of what you're requesting.

To extend the download manager in WordPress, you can use plugins such as
