On the user profile page, I want to add a Twitter and Facebook field. I also want to be able to display this information on the author.php page.

Neat, I didn't know that. It's listed as fixed for milestone 2.9. Does that mean it's available already? (Haven't seen it documented anywhere.)

Yep - I've been using it - can't remember where I first read about it, but see http://wptricks.net/how-to-extend-user-contact-info/ or search for the filter user_contactmethods. All you do is add to an associative array, so you can use unset to get rid of some of the default fields too.

After giving it some thought, I decided I'm going to rate this down. Given that we can customize the input fields, there's no reason for this addition.

What I'd really like to see is the AIM, Yahoo IM, and Jabber / Google Talk fields completely removed. Core shouldn't support these types of services by default because people change their messengers and social networks as often as they change underwear. There's no use in trying to keep up.

Anything like this should be handled with plugins/themes. A better idea would be to create a plugin that added every messenger, social network, or whatever known to man to the user profile page, keeping everyone happy.

Other way around. Plan is to get RID of these links entirely.
