A Better search

WordPress search results are shown in (by default) date order. It would be better if they return by relevance instead.

Also it would be great if you couple do a search across MS installs.

Search of wordpress is its Achilles Heel.

Apart from whatever search is there at present,I find that it does not search intelligently.

So if there is a word eg. london on a post, and someone has mistyped the search to londn - it would say no results.

Apart from whatever search functionality the coders would like to have - at least it should consider the intelligence part.

    thank you

Totally agree with you both. WordPress search very mediocre. Some plugins attempt to make up for its failings but are not perfect.

    WordPress search can be improved.

    1) Sort by relevance. Show the date, of course, just don't sort by it.

    2) Highlight the search terms returned in search results and in the content (when people link to an article listed in the search results).

    3) Search should include all content on the website, including pages and custom post types. (I'm not sure about comments - allow an option, but don't make them searchable by default).

I always install the Relevanssi plugin. Consider its features when improving the WordPress search function.

Jetpack Omnisearch is pretty cool. But search terms need to be highlighted in the snippets that are returned (don't make us waste time, and go blind!) Modified, Omnisearch could be used for front-end searches. (I.e., don't return results for plugins.) -- My goodness! I bet that's what WordPress plans to do!

Glad this one is in progress. What good is a search if the results aren't relevant?

A brand new plugin for WordPress have been released. Check out: http://wp-instantbutler.com (live demo on page).

It'll solve all your search / finding posts / etc issues you'll have.

It's like Omnisearch - just faster (instant), and avaiable on every page (both front-end and backend). Simply type something on your keyboard, and the post, page or menu will show up!

    Hello ninacharette!

Not sure if youre talking about Instant Butler - but it does search everything (like post, pages, products (if you have a webshop) and so on :)
